After earning his master’s in taxation and scoring in the top 10% of his class on his CPA exam, George Birrell began his career in public accounting. 12 years in, he transitioned into controllership for an engineering firm in New York City. Even as his career evolved, as an innovator it was never far from George’s mind that when it came to consumer tax prep, there had to be a better way. When he found that way, the idea behind Taxhub took shape. Determined to bring customers a better tax experience, George began discussing his idea with people with skills he knew he would need and began assembling a team that could help bring this idea to the masses.
What was your journey like to get where you are?
Taxhub remains a bootstrapped operation. After a few years of working full time while also getting Taxhub to the point where we can attract and serve customers on a larger scale, Taxhub now has two CPAs and numerous support staff. Our customer retention is way above the industry average and the YOY growth rate is well above 100%.
In a simpler phrase, what is your company exactly doing?
Taxhub is a virtual, personal income tax preparation platform that recreates a face-to-face tax preparation experience. We combine the convenience and low price of in-home online tax filing with the assurance of having a professionally prepared tax return. Our platform allows users to communicate and share income tax documents with tax professionals just as if the customer was sitting across the desk from them. Our process does not require long complicated questionnaires associated with traditional do-it-yourself online platforms.
What about Metaverse are you most excited for in the future?
We see the Metaverse eventually become a place for commerce, particularly service-based commerce. Alleviating the need for travel and allowing for service providers and clients to work together will help the providers gain trust and establish a higher level of connection.
