David Jacobowitz is a former Meta and TikTok employee who recently left his role in tech to pursue starting his own CPG healthy snacking start-up, Nebula Snacks. An emotional eater and industry classified ‘Super Snacker’ – he seeks to create snacks that are reminiscent of the sugary options he grew up with, but are made with only natural ingredients that won’t weigh you down.
What was your journey like to get where you are?
David worked in digital marketing his entire career up until this point, advertising on behalf of online dating, and at-home fitness companies before moving platform side at Meta in 2017 where he supported over 200 different advertisers growing through ads. At the onset of the COVID pandemic, he had moved to NYC to join the Meta Disruptors team where he supported VC-backed or disruptive rapidly growing businesses. While stuck inside the city in early quarantine, he began gaming again at night with friends across the country and found himself binge eating while playing. One night as the snack wrappers piled high, an idea was struck to make snacks that are for those types of moments, that were better for you that still tasted amazing. Once the idea hit, there was no turning back and the 18-month journey to create a recipe, partner with a chocolatier, and identify a co-manufacturer that would be able to produce the bars for sale. The initial batches in the kitchen did not taste great, but after countless revisions, he landed on a version with the sweetness desired but without the aftertaste often found in alternative sweetened snacks.
In a simpler phrase, what is your company exactly doing?
Nebula Snacks currently creates and sells chocolate bars that are better for you, and operates in a capacity that is better for the planet. Their recipes are sugar-free, dairy-free, and use no artificial ingredients, and all packaging is made with compostable or 100% recyclable materials.
What about Metaverse are you most excited for in the future?
Transparently, I’m terrified of the Metaverse. As someone who sells physical products and consumable goods, it’s branching away. That being said, I am personally excited for the Metaverse as a landscape for education. Personally, I am someone who learns ‘better while doing’ and in theory, the Metaverse will allow for a landscape of practical exercises across a variety of topics to be self-taught in action. Language, food science, etc.
Why should we be paying attention to the Metaverse?
Everyone should be paying attention to the future of the Metaverse. As a potential alternate reality to our very own, where in theory, livelihood could be as active as individuals are on simple social media platforms today. A prominent force and influence on modern society that can truthfully impact the social habits and skills of the population. We are already reaching peak anxiety amongst children who are raised in a world of tech and less human-to-human interaction, and the Metaverse can either be a source of good to re-introduce interpersonal communication skills or it could take our society further from common ground.
